Compiler's Notes:
Despite Mr. Williams' legends, DeSoto did not visit the Nacoochee Valley area. Other Spanish explorers later did however. Most notable were the expeditions sent out by Juan Pardo from the coast of North Carolina beginning in 1566. It is thought that Spanish referred to below were part of this effort. There is no question that the Spanish did mine gold on Dukes Creek.
The Indians that Dr. Williams refers to as Cherokees were actually ancestors of the Creek tribes.
